But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.
— Matthew 20:26

Decide

A call to leadership is not just for those students who show up each week, have the answers to every question, offer to pray, and stack the chairs. Jesus Christ took our ideas of what a leader is—the person in the spotlight, the one that commands and directs, the one that conquers or holds a prominent position—and He flipped it. Jesus showed us that a leader submits and serves. A leader steps back and makes space for others. A leader puts His hands in the mud and takes the long way when someone is in need of Water. A leader creates other leaders.

Leadership USA would love to partner with you in developing a team of student leaders. We want to establish in them, a Christ-centered view of leadership, which involves a shift from self-service to sacrificial service to God and others. We want to prepare them to do the right thing, even when that right thing is the hard thing. We want them to know who they are in light of Christ and the unique ways they function within a team.

Then we want to send them back to you so that you can establish a core group of student leaders within your program, empowered to serve and develop other student leaders, in accordance with their gifts. Nobody attends Leadership Course and leaves the same.

God changes everything. If you are looking for a shift in the way your youth group or organization functions, perhaps Leadership USA can be the catalyst for that shift.

Nominate

Everyone has a leader within them. We want to guide and develop that. What we ask is that you identify 4-5 young ladies and 4-5 young men that you would like to send to our Leadership Girls Course and our Leadership Boys Course. These students don’t have to be those that already exhibit traditional leadership skills. We encourage you to consider those that might need a good nudge or would benefit from someone believing in what God can do through them given a refreshed perspective. The bottom line is, Leadership is for everyone. Students must be under 18 years of age and have completed 9th grade. Bring these names to the Lord in prayer and seek His guidance on who to send. Speak with the parents directly, if possible, and express what it is that you see and why you believe their child needs to attend Leadership Course.

Send

In addition to sending 4-5 boys and 4-5 girls, we ask that you send at least 1-2 adult men and women, that regularly work with the youth in your program. They will accompany your students and will be serving alongside our Leadership staff while on course. We will be showing them a new way to promote leadership and discipleship within your youth program and preparing them to return home and establish a core student leadership team. The adult leaders you send will be responsible for coordinating transportation to and from Quaker Meadow Christian Camp. Adult volunteers must also register and will be expected to clear a background check. Shortly after registration is complete, a Leadership USA staff member will be reaching out to discuss more in-depth the positions that are needed and what unique gifts and experiences will be needed while serving on Leadership Course. No matter the role, all adult volunteers will be learning our approach to leadership and discipleship training and will be prepared to bring that back into your organization.

Support

We recognize that attending Leadership course involves a financial commitment. The cost per student is $595 and the cost per adult volunteer is $375. We are often asked why our volunteers have to pay to serve. The answer is simply that we don’t feel that it is appropriate to expect our high school participants to cover the food and lodging expenses of the adult leaders. Adults have to eat. Adults have to sleep. Adults can cover their costs. With that out of the way, we do recognize that this can be a stretch for many families. Leadership USA will do what we can to support students in their fundraising efforts. We have fundraising resources available to all registrants and volunteers. This includes letter templates to friends and family as well as corporate sponsors and churches. We also have many other fundraising ideas that can be done as an individual or as a group. If you are sending a team of students and adult volunteers, we highly recommend supporting each other in your collective fundraising efforts in a similar way that short-term mission teams do. We often see one student surpass their individual goal and the excess helps to bridge the gap for another. Students should be encouraged to fundraise for the team even if their family paid for their fees in full. Having invested time and effort into Leadership ahead of time prepares the student to be fully invested in the challenges that will be encountered up on the mountain. Lastly, it’s worth saying that in all of our history, we have never had a student not be able to attend for lack of funds. If God wants someone there, He provides a way for it to happen. Sign up in faith, put in the effort, and watch expectantly for What the Lord will do. We are often humbled by His provisions.
